Black History Month

Every February, Canadians are invited to participate in Black History Month festivities and events that honour the legacy of Black Canadians, past and present.
People of African descent helped shape the cultural, legal, political, military, and athletic history of this country, creating the Canada that we know today.  Grey Highlands Secondary School will fly the Pan-African flag during the month of February to celebrate our Black Canadian community. The Pan African Flag was designed to represent the people of the African Diaspora and is a symbol of Black Pride. In the flag, the red represents the blood that has been shed throughout history by Black citizens around the world, the black represents the colour of their skin, and the green represents the richness of the land.

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation was designated as an annual federal statutory holiday in 2021. According to the Government of Canada, this observance “honours the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process.”

GHSS will fly an Every Child Matters Flag to honour the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
and Treaty Recognition Week.
